Sawadee Ka!
Wow!!!! What a day. The best day ever in Thailand. Last night we watched the fireworks on the beach from our balcony to mark the start of Songkran 3 day Festival (Thai New Year). We were told to be prepared over the next 3 days, if we ventured out of the resort to get wet. Wow they weren't wrong!!!!!!
We were awake before the sun had even come up (4am) , must be all the rest and relaxation. I love that time of morning sitting on the balcony with my coffee waiting for the sun to come up and then watching the beach come alive with people.. I am feeling heaps better now with the pills the doctor here gave me they seem to be working, thank heavens. By the time I go back for my check up with him on Monday it will be a new me, sort of.
We caught the resort mini van into Chewang to have a change of Scenery and to see what all the hipe was about with Songkran and boy were we surprised! The place was alive with people and water. Before we even got to the drop off point we knew what they meant about being prepared to get wet. The driver dropped us all off at Starbucks and we hadn't even made it on to the sidewalk and we were drenched and covered in baby power which they smear on your face when they wish you a happy New Year. We made a beeline for 'Burger King' for brunch and by the time we got across the road we were literally dripping wet but then so was everyone else in Chewang. We sat outside of Burger King watching as the utes & motorbikes (music blaring) drove down the main drag packed to the hilt with people and big drums of water drenching the people walking along the street and the others at their 'Command water posts' on the sidewalk retaliating, it was hilarious. All along the main street (which goes for miles) and all the side streets there were garbage bins full of water so you could refill your buckets and water guns. Not to be outdone, brunch over it was time to get involved, we bought Rick's big pump action water gun and I got a little bucket, further on down the road I got my own water gun which I broke 5 minutes later and went back to using my little bucket. We walked for the whole length of the main drag of Chewang and the side streets having the best fun getting drenched and giving back as good as we got the whole time wishing everyone a happy New Year (sawadee pai mea). By 3 o'clock we were exhausted, drowned and sunburnt and we didn't even get to Chewang Beach it was all happening on the streets. We jumped into a taxi and headed home. A great day was had by all! We were so exhausted we didn't even have the energy to venture out for dinner, we ordered room service, Pizza and to top off a great day it was the best Pizza we have ever had.
Early to bed with the thought in mind we will be back in Chewang on Friday to do it all again. What an amazing place, Thailand, the Land of Smiles, how true!
Kob Un Ka!
P.S. Anyone looking for a great holiday - visit Thailand and especially Koh Samui. You can do as much or as little as you want, it has everything. Its Paradise, this is our 5th time here and it never ceases to amaze us. Even better visit around April 13th, 14th & 15th and have a ball during Songkran. It's Wicked....
